Looking for Modern Baju Melayu to Suit the Man of the New Millennium?

Gene Martino has it all! Feast your eyes on our wide collection of classic and modern baju Melayu to suit any and all occasions.Baju Melayu is the traditional and cultural attire for Malay men. They are usually seen wearing the baju Melayu as formal wear to the office or school, for Friday prayers every week, during celebrations such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha, or even at weddings and cultural events.

Traditionally worn with a folded sarong fashioned styled as kain sampin (think of it as the Malay kilt, if you will) that is usually made of songket or pelikat pattern, the baju Melayu can also be paired with the sarong as a sash – also known as a salempang. It really depends on how dressed up or dressed down the guy would like to be.

Completed with a headcover such as a songkok or ketayap, men would also use gemstone buttons to make the whole look ‘pop’ with a touch of fancy. High-quality fabrics such as satin or breathable cotton allow for men to move around comfortably and fashionably with their apparel.

There has always been a polarizing debate between which collar design is more eye-catching; the Teluk Belanga or the Cekak Musang. In fact, during special events such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the choice of the collar is a point of pride, selected to reflect their cultural roots.

Baju Melayu Teluk Belanga originated from the Johor Sultanate in the 1800s. It is even said that the design was invented by Sultan Abu Bakar himself to commemorate the change of the Johor capital from Teluk Belanga in Singapore to Johor Bahru. Therefore, this design is more popular in the south of Peninsula Malaysia.

Its design is an embroidered collar with a single button, usually fashioned with the accompanying sampin worn as a sash, or with the top of the baju Melayu worn outside of the sampin (which is partially seen) to give it a long, flowy appearance that elongates the stature of the man wearing it.

The baju Melayu Cekak Musang on the other hand, more popular in the central and northern regions of Peninsula Malaysia, is round and hard collared, with multiple buttons tucked right up to the neck. This style is complemented with the top tucked into the fully displayed sampin, which gives the model a neat and smart look.
